The study aimed to investigate the uptake pathways of phthalates (PAEs) in Chinese flowering cabbage and the effects of spraying PAE-degrading strains on PAE accumulation in vegetables. Results showed that leaves of cabbage grown in plastic greenhouses absorbed more PAEs from the air than those of outside greenhouses. PAEs were mainly stored in leaf surfaces, while roots from soil were translocated and stored in mesophyll. The values of bioconcentration factors for leaves inside greenhouses were significantly (1.39–3.47 fold) higher than those outside. PAE concentrations in mesophyll increased with soil PAE levels, while those in leaf surfaces remained unaffected. The PAE-degrading strain (Rhodococcus pyridinivorans XB) sprayed on leaf surfaces effectively reduced PAEs by 12.9%–34.9% on leaf surfaces but not in vegetables grown in high-PAE soil. This study demonstrated mitigation of spraying PAE-degrading strain in PAE accumulation by vegetable leaves from the air of plastic greenhouses.
