Project objectives included describing how debris from coastal cities and fisheries circulates and accumulates along the Argentine continental shelf and its potential impact on southern giant petrels (SGP). As a result of oceanographic characteristics and plastic input, high debris accumulation developed along the Argentine shelf. 93.9% of petrels’ provisioning locations overlapped with plastic accumulation areas. Petrels (all classes) were 10% more exposed to debris from fisheries during early developmental stages. Fisheries debris could reduce the amount of plastic eaten by giant petrels. Chicks and juvenile birds would consume less plastic if open sky dumpsters were adequately managed.
