This paper reviews the sources and distribution of plastics in the bay ecosystem, as well as their ecological effects, ranging from individual toxicity to ecosystem trophic transfer. In order to understand the occurrence of plastic pollution, its speciation, and its ecological effects in bay ecosystems, it is crucial to have an understanding of how it occurs. As a result of human activities, large quantities of plastic waste accumulate in bay ecosystems. The study indicates that small plastic particles (micro- and nano-scale) are far more abundant than large plastic debris in bay ecosystems. Therefore, it is important to perform an in-depth risk assessment under realistic environmental conditions for small-sized plastics.
