The characteristics and influencing factors of farmland soil microplastic in Hetao Irrigation District, China
||||||||||

The study examines the characteristics and potential influencing factors of microplastics in the Hetao Irrigation District. The abundance of microplastics in farmland soil was in the range of 1810 to 86331 items/kg, with 90% measuring below 180 µm. The most prevalent polymers present were polyethylene (43.0%) and polyamide (27.8%). The study emphasises the importance of mulching management and agronomic practices in shaping the characteristics of microplastic. Potential pollution sources were found to include agricultural inputs, irrigation equipment, domestic waste, and tire wear. The study also proposes various strategies, such as responsible plastic use, waste management, and irrigation system upgrades.
