Sources of Light Density Microplastic Related to Two Agricultural Practices: The Use of Compost and Plastic Mulch
||||||

This study examines microplastic contamination in terrestrial environments, focusing on vegetable production systems in Southeast Spain and the Netherlands. Agricultural practices like plastic mulch and compost application were identified as significant sources. Soil samples from both regions showed contamination, with microplastic levels averaging 2242 ± 984 MPs kg⁻¹ in Spain and 888 ± 500 MPs kg⁻¹ in the Netherlands. Compost derived from municipal organic waste was more polluted (2800 ± 616 MPs kg⁻¹) than that from garden and greenhouse waste (1253 ± 561 MPs kg⁻¹). These findings highlight the need for environmental studies, monitoring campaigns, and regulatory thresholds to address microplastic pollution in soils.
