In this study, the seasonal variation in the microplastic abundance and characteristics in coastal sediments along the North Eastern Arabian Sea was examined. It revealed that microplastics of sizes ranging between 100 and 500 micrometres were predominant in the coastal sediments. Among the studied sediment samples, fibres are the dominant forms, followed by fragments. The monsoon season shows a higher occurrence of microplastics in sediments due to the increase in the flow of freshwater into the sea, which brings in a higher concentration of microplastics from the catchment areas. More time-series data and research are required to understand the spatial-temporal variations of microplastics and their potential impacts on marine organisms and the environment.
