Seasonal and spatial variations in the distribution pattern, sources and impacts of microplastics along different coastal zones of Tamil Nadu, India
||||||||

In this study, MPs in the water and sediment of the Tamil Nadu coast were studied in two seasons. The spatiotemporal variations of microplastics (MPs) on the Coromandel Coast, Palk Bay, Gulf of Mannar, and West Coast of Tamil Nadu, India, were investigated in this study. MPs of sizes 0.5–1 mm were dominant in the summer with 16 polymers, while 3–4 mm MPs dominated the monsoon season with 23 polymers. The study reveals that seasonal changes do cause variations in MP pollution characteristics, whereas the weathering characteristics of MPs in water and sediments do not vary between seasons. The high MP abundance and diversity (MPDII = 0.77) of the Coromandel Coast points to multiple MP sources of pollution and the need for immediate control measures.
