In West Africa, Accra and Lagos are major sources of marine plastic pollution. Other coastal cities generating marine plastic waste can also benefit from global information sources. The model is based on topography, seasonal rainfall, drainage into rivers, and river transport to the ocean, along with household surveys on plastic use. The highest priority for cleanup is given to areas with high plastic-waste disposal along river channels or steep slopes with high rainfall runoff potential. Before the first rainy season, when runoff from the first rains transports large volumes of plastic waste accumulated during the dry season, priority is given.
