This paper brings insights from a survey of macroplastics (MaPs) conducted in Northwest China in the year 2019. The results revealed that the mass of MaPs averaged 47.2 kg ha−1, and the number of MaPs averaged 266.2 pieces ha−1. The mean size of MaPs was estimated to be 19.5 cm² piece−1 or 28.0 mg piece−1. Small MaP pieces accounted for 76.7% of the total number of MaPs detected, while small-sized plastic debris was detected in 70.1%. The arid to semi-arid area was found to exhibit higher MaP contamination as compared to the semi-arid to the semi-humid area. Findings from the study revealed that the fragmented nature of plastic debris makes the plastic film recovery more challenging, causing soil pollution. Further studies are needed to regulate plastic mulch methods and explore the degradation process.
