The Huangshui catchment in the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau was studied for microplastics (MPs) abundance, distribution characteristics, and influencing factors. MP levels ranged from 6 to 444 items/kg, with an average of 86 items/kg. Small-sized MPs were found to be more abundant than large-sized ones. Polyethylene was the most common source, and residual mulching film was the main source. MP abundance in urban areas was found to be significantly higher than in other areas. Population density was found to be positively correlated with MP abundance, suggesting human activities contribute to MP pollution. The study also examined the effects of irrigation, land use type, and soil physicochemical properties on MP abundance. Atmospheric transport and irrigation with surface water contribute to soil MP pollution. The direct effects of soil properties on MP abundance are still unclear, requiring further research.
