The study examined the impact of cropping characteristics and agricultural practices on microplastics in agricultural plots cultivated with maize, sunflower, and potato plants. The results showed that microplastics were predominantly fragments and fibers, with polyethylene being the dominant polymer. The microplastic abundance ranged from 11347 items/kgdw to 78061 items/kgdw (mean of 52,081.7 items/kgdw). The sunflower and maize plots had higher microplastic abundance and proportions due to straw residues affecting the migration and recovery of mulch. The study also found that the abundance and fragmentation of microplastics were higher in plots where plastic mulch was extensively used, as these crops anchored the mulch near their stem-root systems. The findings reveal that cropping characteristics affect microplastic pollution levels and types.
