This paper investigates the quantitative assessment of microplastics (MPs) in surface waters and sediments in the Sundarbans mangrove region of the northern Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. The average concentrations of MPs observed during the pre-monsoon sampling period were found to be on the higher side than those observed during the post-monsoon period. MP abundance was significantly higher at the downstream sampling station as compared to the upstream station. Also, the analysis from the study revealed that MPs were dominated by fibers in type, smaller dimensions in shape, black in colour, and polyethylene terephthalate in composition. The paper also highlights that comprehensive research is needed for plastic contamination control and management in this crucial ecosystem.
