Microplastic Pollution: A Brief Review of Its Source and Abundance in Different Aquatic Ecosytems
||||

A comprehensive overview of pollution-causing microplastics, their prevalence, and existing research gaps is presented in this paper in order to prioritise future research. Research has shown that aquatic ecosystems near urban centers contain higher levels of microplastics, and the aquatic organisms in these areas accumulate significant quantities of microplastics. Furthermore, microplastics serve as a carrier of other water pollutants, including dyes, heavy metals, and other chemicals. A study of microplastics and their distribution as well as their detrimental effects on the ecosystem and marine biodiversity has been conducted in this paper. Additionally, the study points to potential research opportunities that can contribute to minimising the negative impacts on the ecosystem in the future.
