Melatonin reduces nanoplastic uptake, translocation, and toxicity in wheat

This study explores the role of melatonin in reducing the uptake, translocation, and toxicity of nanoplastics in wheat. Exogenous melatonin application decreased nanoplastic uptake by roots and their movement to shoots by regulating aquaporin gene expression. It also activated the ROS scavenging system, maintaining redox balance and improving carbohydrate metabolism, which helped mitigate the negative effects of nanoplastics on plant growth. Melatonin accumulation in leaves further enhanced the plant’s tolerance to nanoplastic toxicity. These findings suggest that melatonin could be a promising strategy for managing nanoplastic pollution in crop production.
