Is informal electronic waste recycling a newer source for atmospheric industrial persistent organic pollutants in Indian metropolitan cities?

An analysis of several articles demonstrating industrial persistent organic pollutants (iPOPs) such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), released from major cities in India is presented in this paper.

The major highlights are that urban centres are identified as major emission source regions for industrial organic pollutants such as polychlorinated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers in India. They also established that the informal electronic waste recycling is an emerging and ongoing source for atmospheric industrial persistent organic pollutants. While contaminated soil can act as a secondary emission source.
