The chapter from the book ‘Plastics and the Ocean’ edited by Anthony L. Andrady, summarizes the human dimension of plastic pollution, focusing on human behavior and its determinants during the development of the plastic system. Several antecedents of behavior are discussed, including risk perception, motivation, and social norms, as well as methodological approaches. An environmental psychology perspective is applied to a scoping review of recent behavior change interventions in the international peer-reviewed literature. A scoping review focuses specifically on behavior change interventions designed to reduce plastic consumption and waste in four sectors: business and retail, tourism and leisure, education, and community. The paper discusses the challenges, gaps, and future directions of research.
