This study links data on face mask usage with solid waste management data in order to estimate annual face mask utilization and plastic pollution from mismanagement of masks in 46 coastal regions. About 0.15 million tons to 0.39 million tons of plastic debris could end up in global oceans within a year. Plastic debris entering the ocean will rise with reduced waste management facilities. Waste management facilities must be improved to stop masks and solid waste from becoming a problem.
