Contribution of mulch film to microplastics in agricultural soil and surface water in China
||||||

The study measured the microplastics (MPs) concentrations in soil derived from Agricultural Mulch Film abrasion (CMP) and total MPs from all sources in Agricultural Soil (AS) CTMP. The ratios of CMP to CTMP were calculated, revealing AMFs’ contribution to MPs in AS. The study also estimated the potential contribution of soil erosion to MPs in the ocean. In 2018, China’s MP inventory ranged from 4.9 × 106 to 1.0 × 107 tonnes. AMFs contributed 10%-30% of CTMP, with certainties of 60%–95%. The national mass transfer amount of MPs from AS to surface water was 1.2 × 105−2.2 × 105 tonnes, with fluxes into the ocean from AS 3.4 × 104−6.6 × 104 tonnes. AMFs are likely to have contributed to 10%–30% of the national mass transfer amount of MPs (MTTMP) and fluxes to the ocean.
