Basic principles for development and implementation of plastic clean-up technologies: What can we learn from fisheries management?

Despite the positive effects of clean-ups, the paper emphasizes two perspectives overlooked to date which are critical in evaluating cost-benefit ratios for clean-ups: first, cleaning efficiency, focusing on litter density and accessibility; and second, potential consequences of clean-up technologies. The principles of catch per unit effort and impact on non-target species, well known from fisheries management, should be applied to marine litter removal schemes.
