The study collected soil samples from facility and non-facility agriculture in Jingyang County, Shaanxi Province, to investigate the distribution and risks of microplastics. The results showed that facility agriculture soil had higher microplastic abundance than non-facility agriculture soil, increasing with planting years. The microplastics were mostly <100 μm in size and negatively correlated with particle size. The study identified 30 chemical constituents, with PE and PET being the main ones. All sampling sites were ecological risk category I, and no carcinogenic risk to human health was found. The findings from the study revealed that the government should encourage farmers to improve mulch recycling efficiency and manage waste agricultural inputs.
