Effects of plastic mulching and plastic residue on agricultural production: A meta-analysis
|||||

As a large agricultural country, China has a limited supply of water, affecting its food production. Due to differences in climatic conditions, spatial distribution characteristics, and cropping systems and methods, plastic mulching technology can effectively modify the crop growth environment and crop production in China. In this study, a meta-analysis was conducted to quantitatively analyse the effects of plastic film mulching and residual plastic on yield and water use efficiency (WUE) of maize, wheat, potato, and cotton in China based on 266 peer-reviewed publications. Based on the findings of the study, plastic mulching can significantly improve crop yield and WUE, particularly in dryland farming. It is, however, highly recommended to take necessary measures in order to improve the technology for recovering residual plastic film in order to protect the environment
