]]> This CMM has been formulated with the aim of preventing and significantly reducing various forms of marine pollution. It stipulates that each member and CNCP must exert all reasonable efforts to combat, minimise, and eliminate abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded fishing gear. The document outlines the responsibilities of vessels, emphasising that they must not intentionally abandon or discard fishing gear, and should make reasonable attempts to recover any lost gear. Furthermore, the CMM prohibits vessels from releasing any form of plastics into the sea, which encompasses items such as synthetic ropes, synthetic fishing nets, plastic garbage bags, and incinerator residues from plastic products. The text also provides guidelines for averting the discharge of oil or fuel products, food waste, household waste, and sewage into the sea. The text consists of 10 articles.

]]> This review analyses the current status of microplastic research in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). This paper focuses on publications pertaining to the occurrence and distribution of microplastics in the environment, including water, sediments, and soil, and the environmental impact of MPs, particularly their presence and effects on aquatic and terrestrial organisms. It was found that LAC has only contributed to 5% of the global scientific output on microplastics, and overall, the highest contributor within the region was Brazil (52%), followed by Chile (16%) and Mexico (13%). The barriers to conducting microplastic research in LAC and their exacerbation by the COVID-19 pandemic were highlighted to provide additional context behind the relatively low scientific production and improve recommendations encouraging research in this region.

The analysis from the study reveals that meso- and microplastics were strongly correlated in both seasons (summer and winter), suggesting meso-plastics are constantly breaking down as microplastic sources. Additionally, heavy metals (e.g., Cu, Pb) were found in low concentrations (mean concentrations < 0.4%) on the surface of some mesoplastics. The study provides a baseline on multiple factors involving small plastic debris on the Peruvian coast and preliminarily identifies associated contaminants.
